Fruit for Lunch

The Hubs is taking a Tactical Rifle Class for work. He will be out at a Firing Range for 3 Days. Because the Range is out in the middle of nowhere, he has to pack his lunch and drinks while in class.
Following is a conversation we had about what to pack:

Hubs: I want to get Bologna and American Cheese for my Sandwiches.

Me: Honey...American Cheese is so processed! Why don't we get you some Turkey and some nice Swiss Cheese?

Hubs: No....I want Bologna and American Cheese.

Me: OK........ But how about we get you some fruit to take with you instead of a bunch of Hostess Snack Cakes?

Hubs: I was thinking Hostess Fruit Pies. There is fruit in that isn't there?

Me: I give up....................

Wow. Make him rent the movie "Supersize Me" for a quick lowdown of how the megacorps have replaced real food with fake crap and chemicals. And to think we let them do it...

What is it with husbands?! Mine is FINALLY (after almost 9 years of marriage) letting me pack him healthier lunches. Don't give up!

hm...he sounds like a tough one! Eating habits can be hard to change. It's important that the person wants to change, I guess.

I agree with Elle, don't give up. Here's one suggestion - take fish oil capsules. You should take them, too. Get ones with Omega 3, 6 and 9.

Fruit, also, isn't for everyone. I'm pretty resistant to fruit. Maybe change one thing in the sandwich and not both? Condiments like mustard or a tiny bit of mayo help. Bologna seems so high in fat to me.

How about roast beef? That's pretty tasty and manly, lol.

LOL, well at least he likes fruit pies! Enjoyed your little conversation. Fun blog. You came by to visit me a long time ago, and wanted to swing by and say Hi. Glad I did.

Have a great day! :-)

Good idea - just give up!!!

I've heard that American cheese (the slices wrapped in plastic) are chemically only one molecule away from actually being plastic!!!

You know, all we can do is try.

I was having a conversation at a professional conference with a Canadian friend. She asked what "American Cheese" was. When I told her it was a processed cheese product, and not really cheese at all, her incredulous comment was "And this is what you all choose to put your name on?! At least Canadian Bacon is real meat." :)

LOL! Yeah, do rent the movie Supersize Me...it's a wake-up...my daughter went off junk food immediately.

Just stopping in to say hi and thank you for your prayers for our safety as the fire approached last night...thankfully, it's turned and we're safe!! Thank you!!! And we thank God...

LOL! One of the ways we got around the "what we're used to eating" thing was for me to find substitute things that were similar, but natural...for instance, you could slowly sample types of cheese over a period of time, using them melted in cheese sandwiches, for spreads with cherry tomatoes on crackers, with preservative-free sliced meats, etc...and not have to give up on cheese with a certain "mouth feel." Most people used to a mild tasting processed cheese would do well trying a Gouda or Muenster or Mozzarella sliced thin rather than one of the stronger or "stinkier" cheese to start with. My daughter began to love those mild spreadable soft white cheeses that came mixed with herbs...you usually find the "real" cheeses in the deli section. Now one of my daughter's favorite meals is some toasted dark bread spread with herbed soft goat cheese and halved cherry tomatoes...what a difference from the child who wanted only Little Debbies and soda!

Hot fresh baked bread, real butter, and honey rival any processed desserts I've ever had...yum! I'm not personally a big fruit eater...I just don't crave it, but I looove smoothies made with berries. Don't give up...it's a process, and is sometimes as easy as finding the most basic homemade "good eats" and simply substituting them for the Twinkies....

Good luck!!
